Its distinctive structure resembles an alpha-hydroxy fatty acid, either saturated or unsaturated, contributing to its unique properties. In the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin), Ceramide 6 II constitutes approximately 16% of the total ceramide content in this layer. It is instrumental in reinforcing the skin barrier function, preventing moisture loss, and protecting the skin from external irritants.
