Glabridin is a natural whitening agent extracted from specific varieties of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra Linne). It has strong antibacterial properties, prevents UV-induced inflammation, pigmentation, and rough skin. It can remove superoxide ions and inhibit hemolysis caused by hydrogen peroxide. It can inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, but also can inhibit the activity of dopachrome interconversion and DHICA oxidase. It is a fast, high-efficiency, green whitening cosmetic additive with similarity to SOD (superoxide dismutase). The ability to scavenge oxygen free radicals also has the ability to resist oxygen radicals similar to vitamin E.
