Due to its stability, tocopheryl acetate is the most commonly used cosmetic vitamin E derivative. Tocopheryl acetate can be regarded as a precursor for transport of biologically active alpha-tocopherol through the outer skin layers. Upon penetration, it is enzymatically hydrolyzed to release alpha-tocopherol in the skin.
